I tested with UNICODE="1" and FONT="lat0 ... success!
No idea why the special characters do not display while they are available in
the font.
My current (8.2) setup is

FONT="lat1-16 -m 8859-15"
# End /etc/sysconfig/console
I use "nodeadkeys" so I can use the "back tick". Otherwise it would be an
accent for the french e.
@Bruce:
It is your choice whether to include UNICODE="1" or change to "lat1". Without
one change it does not work for me.
