BTW - it's also recommended that you don't bottom post your response to

Where exactly is this recommended? It certainly isn't anywhere on the
LFS site. In fact, the LFS FAQs specifically mention netiquette that
includes posting responses *below* quoted text...

Bruce,
To prevent further confusion among other new users (or those that have
been away from lfs for awhile), I suggest that the "make check" lines be
removed from Chap.5, specifically: 5.13, 14, 17, 19-23, 25-9, 31-33, &
35.
It is confusing when a user is admonished to follow the book exactly,
however in the next breath they are criticized for runs tests in Chap. 5.
Just my two cents... spend it as you wish.

The book does say earlier, in Chapter 4, that testsuites in Chapter 5
are not recommended, and several of those pages you mentioned reiterate
this. LFS builders do need to be paying attention to the book's text,
not just blindly running every command.
Also, almost nobody actually reads the lfs-book list, as it's generally
just used for automated messages from SVN and/or Trac, so I am copying
the lfs-dev list so that this will actually be seen.
