Our mails crossed.  Meanwhile, I've booted the new system and then I
blew away /tools (so I can retime the SBU) before it occurred to me
that I would not now be able to retry the stripping (for the progs -
I had stripped them before by adding '|| true' after each command).

So, for the segfault - no idea, probably something local to me.
