Possibly, but I can't think of any package that I'd want to remove right 
now.

That's a possibility, but I wanted to get the discussion about standards 
way up front.  We could have two sections -- Standards -- Why is each 
package in the Book.  However, I thought that the 2nd would flow nicely 
from the first.

I like the point, but am a bit uncomfortable with the wording.  What do 
you think about 'Background for Package Choices in LFS'?
