You may want to consider using the cross-lfs book ( in development ) or
the cross-lfs scripts (from svn) if attempting a bi-arch x86_64 build
from a 32bit OS.

The book is (IIRC) under http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/~jhuntwork ,
the scripts are in svn.linuxfromscratch.org ( cross-lfs )

Should buy you some clues ;-)

Thanks for the tip, actually, it really did! :-)

But I used another version. Seems several persons have (had) their
own unofficial versions, for I got a tip about one on
http://documents.jg555.com/cross-lfs/x86_64/ which was dated
050720, that's the one I ended up using.

(Now I see it's dated 050723, while yours is dated 050707, and
one has appeared on http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view,
which is also a 050723-rendering. That last location is of
course the one which I looked in when I started doing my
build, but then (a few days ago) it was not rendered there
at all. I don't know the reason. (I sense some kind of
(partially) unresolved conflicts here.) )

But most things work juuust fiiiine right now...!
(Except that blasted Java... I must have done something wrong.)
