Merci Emmanuel, I read up on base 64 encoding and there is no 100% reliable way to detect such strings.
Pulling the schema should work in theory, but that would make the LDAP gateway fatter and would probably require schema caching if I'm to avoid the costly schema pull overhead for each ADD or MODIFY operation. So, after some thought I decided to change the API of my JSON-RPC methods so that clients need to explicitly flag all binary values.
