I suspect that, in this rare instance,
perl actually means what it says... :>

$* is no longer supported
(S deprecated, syntax) The special variable $*, deprecated in older
perls, has been removed as of 5.9.0 and is no longer supported. You
should use the "//m" and "//s" regexp modifiers instead.
I no longer have a current latex2html installed,
but grepping a 2002 version shows many comments
that "MRO: replaced $* by /m", but still a
few blocks wrapped with:
10502: $* = 1; # Multiline matching ON
10514: $* = 0; # Multiline matching OFF
