I tend to save and "binge read" digests but for some reason, opened this one
yesterday, saw Marion's name and knew the worst. (Thank you, Jo Ann, for
sharing the sad news so promptly in view of the digest's time lag.) Marion
first caught my attention at Ithaca in 2001 and we were classmates in
Bedfordshire, Lier and Carrickmacross several times after that. Marion was
present when I gave Mary Shields the partly- worked Carrickmacross piece
designed by Mary's Irish "Lace Muse", Annie Clark, which I had found in Ottawa.
In 2016 I took Marion's Carrickmacross Class at Convention so that she could
help me re-draft that piece - I knew it needed her inspired feel for line and
symmetry, and her impeccable technique. As too often, she was struggling with
the effects of therapy but riding her scooter with customary verve. Walking
beside her after class I couldn't keep up or help avoid the encounter with an
elevator door that made her a cheerful, wise-cracking captive behind it for !
several hours before being rescued! I'm sure all who knew her were as much in
awe of that humour, sheer will and courage in the face of her health issues as
we were of her artistic and technical talents, shown in her lace and the many
crafts she mastered, to bestow on us the exquisite hand-made tools, jewels and
trinkets that will preserve her memory. I feel blessed to have been her
classmate again last year in Greet's Lier class, glad that she enjoyed one
more Ithaca weekend that I'm sorry to have missed, but know her gifts and
dauntless spirit are alive in our hearts.
