I've had this question myself, and my answer is: it depends on how much is left. :-)
If it's just a short little bit and it's a fine cotton, I pull it off and put it in a ziplock and save it for mum to use as padding in her cordonnet in her NL (if it's white or ecru). If there's a good amount on a bobbin (enough for a half to 3/4 yard on each bobbin of a pair), I will wind it on to an empty bobbin, and make a pair that can be added in when needed in my Beds projects. If it's a thread I don't use on a regular basis, I'll pull it off the bobbin and make a little mini 'hank' of thread doing a figure 8 wrap of thump and pinkie finger - and I'll end up with 1 'hank' per bobbin, which I then store in a labelled Ziploc for when I might want to use that thread again. I think I ended up with a bag with close to 90 'hanks' of unbleached 50 linen one time, after finishing a Torchon sample. Hope this helps.
