Many thanks to Katrina for this information. I have long been interested in this historical detail. In fact, Elena Kanagy-Loux followed up on it, and discovered that the artifacts were being stored in the World Trade Center on 9/11 and so are no longer in existence. Interesting that the researcher thought the domestic activity of needlework would create an appearance of gentility. I have always wondered if it wasn't an indication that every poor person in New York was doing piecework for the garment industry all the time. But, I have nothing to base that on. Devon
