which direction are you trying to do the leaves/tallies?  if you are going
down they should be easy.  if going across, it is more of a mind set than a
technique.  perhaps try to do some samples off to the side and then work
along on the pattern doing a couple of successful passes to each until
success.  have a great New Year.
