If you are in Nederlands/Belgium, put Antwerpen (Antwerp) Belgium on your list.
DH suggested we go here, he saw lace places. When I did, too, we booked a few
days at the Central Hostel, IYH, which, btw, is quite nice. There were 3 lace
stores listed. The only one that still exists is Antwerps Kantwinkeltje.
Personally, as a lacemaker, I was underwhelmed. However, the lace exhibit in
the St. Charles Borromeo Church, Sint-Carolus Borromeuskerk, Hendrik
Conscienceplein 6 is well worth the 2 flights of shallow stairs and 5 euro. I
saw a fascinating exhibit of Turnhout lace. Also, I saw the Naar de Bronn
book, so highly esteemed by Binche lace makers, for sale. Upon inquiry, one of
the authors, Lieve Vroom has some pieces demonstrating the ideas of the book.
Lots of lace on display. I have suggested, however, that while lacemakers are
going to go gaga over the exhibits, it would help the rest of the world to
appreciate what's there if there were more information provid!
ed. Even the inevitable how many bobbins, or how long it took to make. A
lace maker knows what she/he's looking at, an ordinary person needs some
explanation. I hope you get this message, as two prior emails I sent never
made it to the list. Lyn from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, presently in
Antwerpen, Belgium
