Dear Sharon,
You are right about the emergence of the modern US lacemaking community in
part from among doll collectors, but there does not seem to have been a strong
East/West coast divide between these two revivalist movements.. The United
Federation of Doll Clubs was launched in a 1937 radio appearance by doll
collector Mary E. Lewis, in which she invited like- minded collectors to meet
her at a New York hotel. The eight women who responded formed the National
Doll and Toy Collectors Club, and although the first member clubs were mainly
in the N East, the organization soon became national, adopting the name "United
Federation Of Doll Clubs, Inc." in 1949. The full history can be found here:
https://www.ufdc.org/about-ufdc/the-history-of-ufdc/
Four years later, at the 1953 annual meeting of UFDC, four members discovered a
common interest in the lace worn by antique dolls, and the need to learn more
about it. They agreed to meet annually and in !954 launched the Old Lacers, as
a study group within UFDC (a bit like the Arachne gatherings that take place
during today's IOLI Conventions!) As the organization grew, it was renamed
National Old Lacers, then International Old Lacers, Inc. and now IOLI stands
for "International Organization Of Lace, Inc." embracing members and laces of
all ages and nationalities. In 1973 IOLI members voted to separate from UFDC
and hold their own AGM and first convention. There is a brief history of IOLI
on its website, https://internationalorganizationoflace.org/ but a fuller
version is to be found in its annual members' hand book. Although I am sure
that many IOLI members are doll enthusiasts, like myself, when I presented a
small exhibit of interesting lace-trimmed doll clothes to re!
cognize IOLI's origins at its 50th anniversary convention in 2003 at
Hasbrouck, NJ, no-one seemed to understand its significance (perhaps because my
introductory statement and item captions were not displayed as intended with
the items.) Maybe the time is right for a "Lace on Dolls Clothes" study group
to be formed within IOLI, to come full circle?

Pam Glew, IOLI Canada East, London and St Thomas Doll Club.
