Hi Arachnids
Thank you for your response. I gave the original email the name Valenciennes
bobbin as I was told this at one time, but not being sure I sent the
question. I have had a definite response that is is a Bayeux bobbin and a
suggestion that it might be from the Arras area France another is
Gravenmoer, Netherlands. Are there any other suggestions? Have any been
uncovered from old houses that have been renovated with indications that the
bobbins had been lost into cracks and crannies that had been sealed during
previous renovations? Thus giving an indication of age. Incidentally the
bobbin is about the weight of the small Bince bobbins and my small East
Midlands bobbins including a seed bead spangle that I use for making Mechlin
using 160/2 Egyptian cotton. This was my thought that the hole was to reduce
weight.
There have been several answers regarding the hole drilled upwards from the
tail end of the bobbin 2.7cm deep and 4mm wide at the opening. I have seen
bobbin makers and others at work using a lathe and none I have seen needed a
hole this wide and this deep when making small items. There is no thread
(spiral groove) in the hole, nor does it appear that anything has been
pushed into the hole, the sides of it appearing to be in pristine condition.
Nor does it appear to have been capped in any way, the edges of the hole
being quite sharp and clean.
Looking forward to more comments
Alex.

Hi Alex,
Good to have new Arachne topics, this one is quite interesting. Back home on
my office computer I now have an Arachne shortcut button on my bookmark bar.
Everything seems to be there. Not sure why some email gets lost and not
found?
Do you think spangles were ever attached with a screw from the bottom of the
bobbin? We have a bobbin maker in Canada, Richard Pikul, who puts weights
inside the bottom of his continental bobbins. He has a website and would
most likely be interested in seeing this. His are weighty with no spangles,
puts a cap over the hole after the weights are inserted.
Hope you are having lovely weather, snow on the prairies is finally melting,

Hi Arachnids
Re: Bobbin. Thank you for your replies. I saw the digest on my list and
then
it disappeared so I only have your answers sent to me personally. As
several
have asked for photos I have sent individually and posted a couple on my
website www.alexstillwell.wordpress.com under the BLOG tab.
Looking forward to the comments
