There is possibly another reason for the lack of a country in the name.  The
obvious candidate is "British Lace Guild".  However in UK there were and
still are some legal restrictions placed on the use of the word "British"
(or UK) in names of organisations.  At the time it started the Lace Guild
would have been unlikely to obtain permission to use "British" because it
was then too small. I suspect that the founders decided it was a
bureaucratic problem they should simply avoid by not putting a country in
the name.
