One other aspect of this issue is that sometimes "stupid" people aren't aware that a given item is available directly from the author/maker and don't know of any other source for the item.
I, myself, would surely qualify as a stupid person for purchasing a good many items on ebay--most recently a book by Elwyn Kenn that I've been looking for and haven't been able to find at the suppliers with whom I'm familiar. I paid a pretty penny for it, too, but I'm glad to have it! I think our sisters in the UK have more opportunities to obtain these items locally that we have in the US. Lucky you!
