I'd put my vote with the majority on this one: keep the base, toss the pillow (and the sticky pins too, while you're at it). :)


You *could* cover the whole wobbly mess (Polly S and the tape you used to mend it with) with several layers of felted wool and work on that, but, if you're going to go to that kind of trouble, you might as well start with a core that isn't already half-disintegrated. If you don't like styrofoam (neither do I <g>), then make the core of carpet padding (the less "plasticky" kind, the better) and cover *that* with several layers of felted wool.

As for it being not your pillow, but your granny's, on loan... I'll bet your granny's no younger than I am (I'll be 56 come October) and will be delighted to have her views of "plastic" (devil's invention, half of the time) confirmed, rather than blaming you for spoiling her best pillow. She'll *know* the pillow wasn't that great to start with
