I think the transactions don't need different inherent types - you get a dividend of some sort and you either get the cash or use it to buy additional shares. The dividend could be interest, dividends, long or short term capital gains distributions. Using different Categories is sufficient to allow you to prepare the reports you need to prepare your taxes. Separately, it is known that Investments needs a major overhaul, but that is not high on the current priority list. Right now the basics of capital gains are not really handled by KMM. I'm actually working on accumulating all the various things that need to be dealt with, which are now not really addressed.
