This ended up working. It was a data driven bug. One of my payees name was so long it caused this issue(happened while importing from gnucash, the don't have a payee and use description as a payee). Essentially the drop-down box reads from the payees and sizes itself according to the longest entry. I think the code can be enhanced to truncate past X bytes, at least in the combo box.
I have not taken a look at the code though.
