(From memory) it starts with the day part selected. At that point, you can just type the day, and then the year gets selected. Unfortunately, you then need to use the left arrow to move back to the month part. I am not certain if the order of the date parts (month, day, year) adjusts based on your locale setting. I don't know exactly what underlying QT and/or KDE widgets are used to make up the complete date widget, but that is what controls what KMM is able to do there. So, you can enter dates with the keyboard, but it is not a convenient as you desire.
