George,

The difficulty is that every source of stock/funds/currency prices is different, and they don't simply provide it in a nicely parseable format. They provide it for human eyes, in the form of a very complicated web page, which they change the design of without notice to anybody. Picking the right information out of all that machine generated HTML is not trivial. Then, some sources decide they don't want programs like ours extracting that data, so they change the layout again, or configure the web pages so that they only work if they think a real human is looking at them in a browser, but provide something different, or maybe just an error message, if they think the request was made by a program.

If you want to have any hope of someone fixing any of the sources you have a problem with, you need to give someone enough information for them to track down the cause of the failure and hopefully be able to fix it. For this, that would be a specific source and a specific stock symbol, at minimum. It would also include what changes (if any) you made in the source configuration from the Online Quotes configuration dialog. I suspect I could figure out the exact error message you are getting, since I don't think there are too many options there, but it would have been nicer and easier if you would have simply done a copy/paste of the exact error from one of the popups. Also, please remember that everyone who works on KMyMoney (as with all Free and Open Source Software) is a volunteer, and they generally tend to work on problems they find interesting.

Again, I ask if you read through any of the forum posts. I don't suppose that will actually solve your problem, but it might give some more context as to why the problems in this area continue, and cannot be solved trivially.

I have tried two or three sources. The last was Wall Street online DE default, also used Globe and Mail,Wallstreet Hamburg. Popup says failed to retrieve quote from... Why is it so difficult to have the stocks and funds updated?

 George,

What source are you using for the updates?  As Thomas said, some sites,  such as Yahoo, have simply stopped providing that service, so it simply
won't work, and there is nothing KMyMoney can do about it.  Some have
changed the format of what they provide, so we might be able to adjust
the settings for that source, but we would need to know which source.
Did you look through the forum as Thomas suggested?  In terms of errors
- is there really nothing more than "failed to update"?  Is that on
console or in a pop-up?
