No! I used to read the manual[1] and do my work step by step. After the crash I've searched for something in the manual and didn't find anything about this option [2].

Done. However, I'm curious what the OP searched for. (I wonder if there is any reasonable way to create a useful index for the manual. I don't think it's a standard part of the docbook process. I'll try bringing that up on the documentation writers list.)

in the same directory as you kmymoney file. So for example "file.kmy" will have "file.kmy~1" as a backup (or something similar) just like a text editor would backup a text file after editing it.
It is also important to note that these autosave backups (on the Global tab of the Configure KMyMoney dialog) are different from the explicit backups done from the File/Backup menu command.
