They way I have implemented it, is to ensure that each column is always wide
enough to contain its present data, instead of some columns being clipped and
others with too much of the space.  So, I don't really see any need for a user
to deliberately clip his data or to allocate more space than needed.  So,
persistence was deemed unnecessary.
