In my experience, encrypted swap works fine.  During hibernation the
kernel writes to the encrypted swap and shuts the system down.  On
power up, the system starts booting up normally, the initramfs asks
the user for the passphrase, sees the resume information, and
initiates the resume from the encrypted swap.
