I have exactly the same issue on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. My right click also does not work unless I click with 2 fingers.
The kernel is 3.13.0-43-generic and 64-bit. I have a Dell Inspiron 5547 as well. I'd upgrade to a newer Ubuntu release, but I have a requirement to keep this version. Is there a supported way I can upgrade the kernel to 3.16? I saw someone else mentioned that kernel fixed their touchpad issues.
