I don't think it makes sense to change this in the 3.16 kernel, which is currently what's being used in vivid. On the surface it makes sense to disable CONFIG_FW_LOADER_USER_HELPER in the 3.18 branch, except that ultimately the vivid kernel will also be released for trusty. In theory things should still just work, but potentially there are some corner cases which still rely on the fallback.
In the end I guess we probably ought to change it though. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => In Progress ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Seth Forshee (sforshee) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1398458 Title: kernel fails to load iwlwifi firmware - disable CONFIG_FW_LOADER_USER_HELPER Status in linux package in Ubuntu: In Progress Status in systemd package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in openSUSE: Fix Released Bug description: Using current vivid, when using udev 217 wlan0 is missing, it's there and working fine when downgrading to 215 Right after boot, kernel shows [ 6.586593] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Direct firmware load failed with error -2 [ 6.586598] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Falling back to user helper After manually enabling the card, kernel shows Dec 2 11:37:08 localhost kernel: [ 127.133185] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: loaded firmware version 9.221.4.1 build 25532 op_mode iwldvm ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.04 Package: udev 217-2ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.16.0-26.34-generic 3.16.7-ckt1 Uname: Linux 3.16.0-26-generic i686 ApportVersion: 2.14.7-0ubuntu10 Architecture: i386 CurrentDesktop: Unity CustomUdevRuleFiles: 80-net-name-slot.rules 81-canonij_prn.rules Date: Tue Dec 2 17:39:08 2014 EcryptfsInUse: Yes InstallationDate: Installed on 2010-10-09 (1515 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" - Release i386 (20101007) MachineType: Dell Inc.
