The reason is the parallel port which cannot be written to anymore. The printer cannot be detected and even an echo "hello" > /dev/lp0 with an occupied device message. The kernel log contains many errors "DMA write timed out" - they do only appear in the kernel versions with which the parallel port is not working. It is certainly related to the parport problem. Reverting to the raring kernel 3.8 makes the parallel port work again. The saucy 3.11 kernel is affected by the problem to. The original precise kernel was not working either. The ThinkCentre Edge 72 is an Intel IvyBridge based system.
