You have been subscribed to a public bug: I had been using Ubuntu 14.04 for a couple of months on my laptop, no problems. It is a Pavilion dv6 3010us laptop, which is dual-booting to Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Yesterday I noticed that my screen started to flicker and suddenly my computer hard shuts down like someone turned off the power or pulled the plug. I can boot back up and operate Ubuntu for a few minutes and the exact same problem occurs. Sometimes it will happen in the grub boot menu. I
The biggest kick is that my Windows 7 is running perfectly fine without any of the same issues. I was suspecting an overheat issue or power, but my battery is fine, everything is plugged in, and temperature gauges with Speedfan (Windows) and an Ubuntu temperature program both report temps between 48-60 degrees celcius, with the shutdown occuring around the 60 degree mark. I disassembled my laptop and got rid of some hidden doghair/dust in the fan thinking if it was an overheat issue that my help it. Unfortunately the same thing keeps happening. After some research some people have suggested something about CPU Governor or some Ubuntu driver issue. Perhaps the Ubuntu threshold for heat shutdown is lower than in Windows? If it is a Ubuntu bug, please help! I can't even operate Ubuntu to find out information if needed probably, because of these unexpected shutdowns.
