They use WPA and BlueSocket. I thought that this was due to a change at the library, but I just tried reverting to FW13 using b43-fwcutter and instantly noticed much, much faster connections. I guess things must have changed when I started using FW15. I am using 10.10 on a PPC Powerbook G4.
