Looking at the syslog and everything seems fine: Nov 14 14:34:18 deployer kernel: [ 2.420570] Freeing unused kernel memory: 1588k freed Nov 14 14:34:18 deployer kernel: [ 2.423629] Freeing unused kernel memory: 1188k freed Nov 14 14:34:18 deployer kernel: [ 2.474560] e1000e: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - 1.5.1-k Nov 14 14:34:18 deployer kernel: [ 2.474563] e1000e: Copyright(c) 1999 - 2011 Intel Corporation. After a boot, if I do an ifconfig, I only see the loopback device: bladernr@deployer:~$ ifconfig lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1 RX packets:500 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:500 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:98699 (98.6 KB) TX bytes:98699 (98.6 KB) if I do an ifconfig -a, it shows that eth0 is not configured: bladernr@deployer:~$ ifconfig -a eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1f:16:35:57:90 BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) Interrupt:20 Memory:f2500000-f2520000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1 RX packets:500 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:500 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:98699 (98.6 KB) TX bytes:98699 (98.6 KB) if I do "sudo ifup eth0" I get a warning that eth0 is already configured bladernr@deployer:~$ sudo ifup eth0 ifup: interface eth0 already configured The ONLY way I can recover my ethernet device is to manually assign it an IP address and the manually add a default gateway so I can communicate outside the laptop. Once I've manually added the IP and gateway, I can get out and actually work again. This is 12.04.3 Server on a Thinkpad x201 with an Intel 82577LM gigabit NIC onboard.
