Bug description:
Machine was happy with Xubuntu 13.10, but the software has been
discontinued and I was forced to upgrade. USB stick with 14.04.1 would
reboot continuously. USB stick with 14.04.1 server installs
flawlessly, but then the server itself reboots continuously.
WORKAROUND: Boot into recovery mode (hidden grub option)
* Drop to root shell
* Mount disk for read/write
* edit /etc/default/grub: find the line starting with
'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=' and add the word nomodeset inside the quotes
* run update-grub and reboot
