You have been subscribed to a public bug: Hello, I have some kind of "any distribution" bugs here it is : With every kernel more recent than 3.12 (I haven't still found the exact commit, but the first ubuntu released kernel in which it happens is the 3.13rc1), it seems that the kernel is loaded with radeon.audio=1 by default, and the ATI 4550 (and probably others) can't boot (black screen with frozen system) or only with nomodeset.
This error is repoductible with any ubuntu version or flavor, and even with other distros. So to boot any kernel more recent than 3.12 I have to use radeon.audio=0 as an argument to boot. But the second problem is that now, audio over HDMI is disabled, but I have found somewhere a command that make audio over HDMI back : "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio on". I'm free to answer any question and to help to debug it as much I'm skilled enough to do it.
