I may add that it may not be time that was affecting the issue, I think it may have been caused by focusing on a particular window/program. Untested, but suspected.

After the initial installation, the first bug workaround I had to do was set grub to have acpi_backlight=vendor, and that made brightness work in the first place. That should eventually be fixed, but the bigger problem I am having currently, is after the last upgrade to 14.04, the brightness keyboard shortcuts no longer work after a short period of time after boot. After reboot and log on, it all works fine, but after I focus to a window, it never seems to recover.
