This bugs seems to re-open in trusty (ubuntu 14.04) in april 2014, while tying a new GIGABYTE motherboard (H61N-USB3) with a RTL8111E chip !

Packets are being dropped for no apparent reason. Kernel log is full of this: Oct 02 09:13:25 machine kernel: r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: link up Oct 02 12:45:17 machine kernel: r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: link up Oct 02 12:45:20 machine kernel: r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: link up Oct 02 13:15:12 machine kernel: r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: link up Oct 02 13:15:13 machine kernel: r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: link up Oct 02 13:22:13 machine kernel: r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: link up Sometimes there are longer pauses between 'link up' messages and during that time network is not working. Upon investigating a little, I found out that there's an official Realtek driver for 8111E. Stock r8169 driver is faulty for some reason and it doesn't work. Compiling and installing of the official driver wasn't smooth, but in the end the newly compiled r8168 (note the different number) did work. Installation required renaming/removing r8169.ko to prevent it from loading. Original driver can be obtained here: http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false I've noticed that this problem has been around for quite some time (2009 I believe) and no simple solution is offered. RTL 8111E is quite common and a lot of people will have problems with this. :( I am running current Oneiric. bigwhale@thefish:~$ sudo cat /proc/version_signature Ubuntu 3.0.0-11.18-generic 3.0.4 bigwhale@thefish:~$ --- AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24.
