The same hardware boots fine with previous kernels (6.14.0-32-generic and 6.14.0-29-generic). Environment Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) Kernel affected: 6.14.0-33-generic (6.14.0-32 works fine) Architecture: amd64 Installation type: Standard desktop (USB installer originally) Machine: Asus ROG Strix G614J (laptop) CPU: Intel (Raptor Lake) GPU: Intel + NVIDIA hybrid graphics Disk: NVMe SSD (main system drive) Steps to reproduce Update the system (apt upgrade or unattended-upgrades). New kernel 6.14.0-33-generic is installed (confirmed in /var/log/dpkg.log at 2025-10-02 09:13). Reboot system and let GRUB boot with the new kernel (default). System fails during early kernel initialization. Expected result System should boot normally and detect the NVMe SSD as with 6.14.0-32-generic. Actual result With 6.14.0-33-generic, the system fails to detect the NVMe drive. Root partition cannot be mounted. Boot process halts very early, only fans spin. No graphical login, no TTY available, system is unresponsive. A manual reboot is required. Workaround Booting via GRUB → Advanced options → selecting 6.14.0-32-generic works normally. Kernel 6.14.0-29-generic also boots fine. The issue is specific to 6.14.0-33-generic. Additional information /var/log/dpkg.log confirms installation of linux- image-6.14.0-33-generic at 2025-10-02 09:13. No manual kernel installation was done. Problem appeared immediately after unattended upgrade. Other users reported issues with this kernel (NVIDIA module install failures, regressions with peripherals).
