Public bug reported:
On Ubuntu installations, the default swap space is set too small for
many real-world usage scenarios. This often results in the system
running out of swap quickly during high memory usage, which causes
system freezes or crashes.
Expected behavior:
Ubuntu should configure a more appropriate swap size by default, based
on the available RAM and usage patterns.
The system should provide warnings or notifications when the swap space
is almost full to prevent sudden system freezing.
Actual behavior:
Swap is created with a small default size (often just a few hundred MB
or 1-2 GB), which is insufficient in many cases.
There are no warnings or notifications when swap is close to full, which
leads to unexpected system freezes or hangs.
Steps to reproduce:
Install Ubuntu with default settings.
Use applications or workflows that consume a large amount of RAM (heavy
browsers, virtual machines, development tools, etc.).
Observe that the system uses up the swap quickly and eventually freezes
or crashes without any prior warning.
