Public bug reported:
I have been experiencing erratic video webcam performance during Zoom
meetings.
I have tried to debug and fix this problem for several weeks with no
success.
But, I think I have found a workaround and a possible clue to the root cause:
• first power on the computer without the webcam or microphone
• then connected the external USB webcam and microphone.
I have 2 computers that I use for Zoom meetings.
1. Computer A: running Ubuntu 20.04 and the latest Zoom client
• No video related problems for the past 1-2 years.
2. Computer B: running Ubuntu 24.04 and the latest Zoom client
• Erratic video performance the last several months
• Is this related to any Ubuntu 24.04 updates?
I have an external USB Kiyo webcam and an external USB Amigo Cobra
microphone that I move between the 2 computers. I use USB extension
cables on both systems to facilitate the ease of connecting and to
minimize the risk of damaging the USB port on the computers from
multiple plugging.
The relevant debug test steps on Computer B:
1. Connect the USB Kiyo and the USB Amigo to the extension cables.
2. Power on the computer
3. lsusb : both the webcam and microphone are detected
4. Cheese: no video,
1. menu > preferences shows a video device \_SB_.PG10.EUSB…….
2. but it also lists the Kiyo on the drop-down menu, select but still
no video
5. Zoom: have video
6. Unplug the Kiyo webcam, wait 10-30 sec
7. Re-plug the Kiyo webcam
8. lsusb: both the webcam and microphone are detected, the webcam has a new
device ID
9. Cheese: have video
10. Zoom: have video
I hosted 2 Zoom meeting on Sunday (8-17-25), and did not experience any
noticeable video problems.
1. Power on Computer B
2. Login to a user account
3. Connect the USB Kiyo webcam and the USB Amigo microphone
4. Ubuntu > Settings > Sound, verify that the Amigo microphone is recognized
5. Cheese: verify that I have video
6. Zoom: verify that the I have video, audio, and that the correct devices
are detected
7. Host the Zoom meeting
Apparently Ubuntu 24.04 has a problem properly detecting the USB devices
and provisioning the devices.
The workaround seems to work for external USB webcam.
