I like Gabriel's idea.

I totally get that the 470 driver is very old, that nvidia is no longer
maintaining it, and that patching it brings diminishing returns for
Ubuntu as fewer and fewer people use it.

However, it would have been nice to receive a "it looks like this kernel
isn't compatible with your xxxx driver, do you still want to update"
warning before accepting this kernel update rather than unexpectedly
losing half a day's work while I tried to figure out the problem and get
everything working again.

This is particularly true when a release like this goes out in the
middle of an LTS cycle. If I were upgrading the OS, I would boot to a
live image first to check for issues like this before committing, but
I'm generally not going to do this for what seems like a routine mid-
cycle kernel update.
