I like Gabriel's idea. I totally get that the 470 driver is very old, that nvidia is no longer maintaining it, and that patching it brings diminishing returns for Ubuntu as fewer and fewer people use it.
However, it would have been nice to receive a "it looks like this kernel isn't compatible with your xxxx driver, do you still want to update" warning before accepting this kernel update rather than unexpectedly losing half a day's work while I tried to figure out the problem and get everything working again. This is particularly true when a release like this goes out in the middle of an LTS cycle. If I were upgrading the OS, I would boot to a live image first to check for issues like this before committing, but I'm generally not going to do this for what seems like a routine mid- cycle kernel update. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-470 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2110338 Title: Nvidia 470/470-server fails to build on kernel 6.14 HWE Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-470 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-470-server package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-470 source package in Bionic: New Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-470-server source package in Bionic: New Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-470 source package in Focal: New Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-470-server source package in Focal: New Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-470 source package in Jammy: New Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-470-server source package in Jammy: New Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-470 source package in Noble: New Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-470-server source package in Noble: New Bug description: nvidia driver install error ProblemType: Package DistroRelease: Ubuntu 24.04 Package: nvidia-dkms-470-server 470.256.02-0ubuntu0.24.04.1 Uname: Linux 6.14.4-061404-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.28.1-0ubuntu3.5 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: pass Date: Fri May 9 23:05:21 2025 ErrorMessage: installed nvidia-dkms-470-server package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10 InstallationDate: Installed on 2025-04-09 (30 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS "Noble Numbat" - Release amd64 (20250215) Python3Details: /usr/bin/python3.12, Python 3.12.3, python3-minimal, 3.12.3-0ubuntu2 PythonDetails: N/A RelatedPackageVersions: dpkg 1.22.6ubuntu6.1 apt 2.7.14build2 SourcePackage: nvidia-graphics-drivers-470-server Title: package nvidia-dkms-470-server 470.256.02-0ubuntu0.24.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: installed nvidia-dkms-470-server package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10 UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-470/+bug/2110338/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : [email protected] Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
