Public bug reported: On systems using the MSI B850 Tomahawk Max Wifi motherboard, which includes a Realtek ALC4080 audio chipset, no sound output is available out of the box on Ubuntu 24.04.
The issue appears to be caused by the outdated /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/USB- Audio/USB-Audio.conf file provided by the current version of alsa-ucm- conf (1.2.10-1ubuntu5.7). Specifically, the USB ID of the onboard Realtek ALC4080 chipset is not included in the relevant match regex under the If.realtek-alc4080 block. The USB device ID is: Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0db0:cd0e Micro Star International USB Audio Manually editing the /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/USB-Audio/USB-Audio.conf file and modifying the regex under If.realtek-alc4080 to include the USB ID 0db0:cd0e, followed by a reboot, restores sound functionality. This issue has been fixed upstream in the following commit to alsa-ucm-conf: https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-ucm-conf/commit/f6498fbe4c74a897c0df30ba30c5390a9d508ecd ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 24.04 Package: alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.10-1ubuntu5.7 [modified: usr/share/alsa/ucm2/USB-Audio/USB-Audio.conf] ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 6.11.0-29.29~24.04.1-generic 6.11.11 Uname: Linux 6.11.0-29-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.28.1-0ubuntu3.7 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: unknown CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Mon Jul 7 21:22:21 2025 InstallationDate: Installed on 2016-01-26 (3450 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS "Trusty Tahr" - Beta amd64 (20150805) PackageArchitecture: all SourcePackage: alsa-ucm-conf UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to noble on 2024-09-03 (307 days ago) modified.conffile..etc.default.apport: [modified] mtime.conffile..etc.default.apport: 2017-10-18T22:31:18.604368 ** Affects: alsa-ucm-conf (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug noble ** Summary changed: - No sound on MSI B850 Tomhawak Max Wifi (Realtek ALC4080) + No sound on MSI B850 Tomahawk Max Wifi (Realtek ALC4080) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to alsa-ucm-conf in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2116124 Title: No sound on MSI B850 Tomahawk Max Wifi (Realtek ALC4080) Status in alsa-ucm-conf package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: On systems using the MSI B850 Tomahawk Max Wifi motherboard, which includes a Realtek ALC4080 audio chipset, no sound output is available out of the box on Ubuntu 24.04.
