Title:
Fingerprint sensor stopped working after linux-firmware upgrade
(corrected)
Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
The fingerprint sensor on my laptop stopped working on the next boot
after an upgrade to linux-firmware. I assume this is the responsible
package, although fwupd and libfwupd2 were also upgraded at the same
time.
The fingerprint sensor has vid 10a5 and pid a305. It is working in
Windows (I dual boot the machine) and I believe the manufacturer is
CareWe. The attached screenshot shows the sensor's driver version,
which matches the CareWe option of the two Windows drivers provided by
Acer for my laptop (it is an Acer Swift Go model number SFG14-63).
Acer only provides Windows drivers. The fingerprint reader is built
into the laptop keyboard.
As also shown in the screenshot, the laptop detects the device on
boot, but the fingerprint sensor does not appear in the output of
lsusb. Also, fprintd-install returns an error: "Impossible to enroll:
GDBus.Error:net.reactivated.Fprint.Error.NoSuchDevice: No devices
available".
According to /var/log/apt/history.log, linux-firmware was updated at
22:02 on 3 July 2025 - the times of my attempted boots are as per the
journalctl output in the screenshot. All times are Sydney times. NB I
also booted at 20:13, 20:34 and 20:37, using kernel 6.8.0-63, but I
have rolled back to kernel 6.8.0-62 (which was upgraded on 1 July and
the fingerprint continued working until linux-firmware was upgraded)
and lsusb still does not detect the sensor. At 20:36 I installed
kernel 6.11.0-29 and all boots after that appear in the screenshot.
I am using Linux Mint 22.1 (based on Noble).
The package is 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.14.
I expected to see the fingerprint reader appear in the lsusb output,
and for a pop-up to ask me to use the fingerprint reader when I enter
a command with sudo into the terminal. Neither happens.
