I thank you for your help. A few days ago, the update manager suggested a new installation of kernel 53 along with other packages. While reviewing the logs, one entry caught my attention as it checks whether the kernel boots properly:
Linux kernel extra modules for version 6.8.0: "Contains the corresponding System.map file, the modules built by the packager, and scripts that try to ensure that the system is not left in an unbootable state after an update. Supports Generic processors. Geared toward desktop and server systems. You likely do not want to install this package directly. Instead, install the linux-generic meta-package, which will ensure that upgrades work correctly, and that supporting packages are also installed." Here are the updates performed yesterday, which seem to have fixed the issues. The system booted successfully, and the drivers and services started correctly.
