Title: ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 loads atl1c kernel module only with liveCD, not with installed kernel Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Status in Baltix: New Bug description: root@ubuntu:~# lspci -nn |grep Ethernet 03:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications AR8152 v1.1 Fast Ethernet [1969:2060] (rev c1) root@ubuntu:~# cat /proc/modules |grep atl1c atl1c 34955 0 - Live 0xffffffffa003f000 root@ubuntu:~# ifconfig eth0 eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 60:eb:69:24:9f:d1 inet addr:XX.XXX.XX.XXX Bcast:XX.XXX.XX.255 Mask:255.255.252.0 inet6 addr: fe80::62eb:69ff:fe24:9fd1/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:1247667 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:113958 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:3 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:267392991 (267.3 MB) TX bytes:15997997 (15.9 MB) Interrupt:45 The wired Ethernet interface is configured correctly under 64-bit Maverick Meerkat live desktop, but after installation to hard drive, it is no longer detected at boot. The problem existed also under Ubuntu 10.04, so it is not a regression. The hardware platform is a Toshiba Satellite L655-S5101 (Part Number: PSK2CU-01Y01U). I understand that this is a duplicate of a bug filed elsewhere, but the instructions found elsewhere in launchpad and forums are not n00b-friendly enough for me to successfully configure the device. Without explicit instructions of the "sudo type-exactly-this" variety, I'll be hopelessly lost. :^) Matters are further complicated by the fact that the wireless interface also fails to auto-configure correctly, so I have no Internet access at all when booting to the hard drive, which means that walkthroughs which presuppose that I can compile the atl1c.ko from source may not work unless I can manage to "sudo apt-get install build-essential" -- is this a chicken-or-the-egg problem?
