I configured Gnome through the on board GUI to bring my laptop to standby mode when I close the lid. This works perfectly for the 1st, the 3rd, the 5th ... n times where n can't be divided by 2. I would expect that to work every time and not only on odd attempts. This issue is reproducible. This System is an up to date Ubuntu 10.04 x64 upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 x64. This issue is also in 9.10 x64.
