I have checked carefully, 3.11-17 is fine, so the problem is strictly with the kernel attached above. I compiled and packaged it with the intention to host Xen 4.1 server (pv). After installing said package and rebooting, the system doesn't boot automatically.
What I mean is that during boot when the time alloted for user action passes and no key is pressed, system boots with the default 3.11-15 kernel and returns error: md: personality for level 1 is not loaded while also complaining about degraded array, as I noted in the OP. However, when I choose the very same default kernel with the same options (default, not rescue), it boots up just fine.
