The newest Karmic Alpha 2 hasn't fixed this regression (I have only tried the live cd), and as I'm sure you understand, in a laptop/tablet pc living without acpi controls is not an option. I'll attach a picture of what the screen shows if I remove "quiet splash --" from the boot parameters at the point where the boot process halts.
