The linux url resolver won't allow for urls containing dashes

Bug description:
Hi, I recently brought my friend over onto ubuntu because Windows got
corrupted and we had no repair disk. She's not happy with tumblr urls
not working with dashes in.
I've researched this and it seems it's down to something in Linux
itself. I know it's a non-standard url thing, but I doubt tumblr nor
it's users will be happy if Tumblr decided to not allow dashes.
It would be lovely if this could be fixed :)
