Due to limited RAM, I selected Xubuntu 11.10 rather then the mainstream Ubuntu distro. After a successful install, I booted up and hit ctrl-alt-F1, and got a black screen. This is the same situation for tty1 through tty6. From the virtual terminal, I verified that getty was running for all the terminals from 1 to 6.
$ ps waux | grep getty root 943 0.0 0.1 1968 220 tty4 Ss+ 21:50 0:00 /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty4 root 946 0.0 0.1 1968 216 tty5 Ss+ 21:50 0:00 /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty5 root 955 0.0 0.1 1968 220 tty2 Ss+ 21:50 0:00 /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty2 root 956 0.0 0.1 1968 220 tty3 Ss+ 21:50 0:00 /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty3 root 958 0.0 0.1 1968 220 tty6 Ss+ 21:50 0:00 /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty6 root 2220 0.0 0.1 1968 220 tty1 Ss+ 22:19 0:00 /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty1
I then wanted to find out if it was possible to log in with the black screen. I pressed ctrl-alt-F1 and in the darkness of the screen I typed my username, hit enter, password, enter. The login was successful after a few tries, as I could see the new information in the virtual terminal. Note that the virtual terminal did not show itself(pts/0), and the listing for 'who' was empty until I logged-in on tty1.
$ who $ who $ who ajhcasual tty1 2012-04-19 23:20 $
So, the problem is not the software running on tty1, but it is the failure to display the text. It may be a bug relating to the hardware. My hardware is: Acer Aspire 3500 Intel Celeron M 1.4 GHz 256MB RAM The tty1 screen worked fine in Ubuntu 9.04. I can't test Ubuntu 11.10 as the RAM shortage prevents it from booting properly. --- AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24.
