Joseph, so far it's been an isolated, one time event. I use the drive daily and it has worked fine so far after the incident.

Today, I plugged in the drive, copied a number of files into it, and upon pushing the eject button in nautilus (as usual), the computer froze: mouse didn't move, couldn't switch to a tty to kill e.g. a rogue program, nothing. After a few seconds, I heard the fan going full speed, indicating that a program got stuck at 100% CPU usage. After a hard reboot, all is back to normal. First time this happens in the 2 years I've been using this laptop with ubuntu 12.04. Thanks for looking into this.
