In any case, an haswell laptop recently updated from 20.04 to 20.10 now hangs on boot unless you explicitly set GFX_PAYLOAD_LINUX=text in the grub configuration. The hang is just before starting X and sddm (distro is actually kubuntu). When hanging, the system remains responsive to SysRq+B, hence only the video subsystem appears to go dead.
