Trying various eSATA and plain SATA devices on the port, and inserting the optical drive after booting up, neither is detected automatically and need a manual bus scan to be detected: # scan - - - > /sys/class/scsi_host/host?/scan Hotplug works without such manual intervention on this laptop in Windows. I've also seen Linux handle hotplug without this intervention with an eSATA ExpressCard (SiI3132 chipset) on another machine (can't use that in this one, it's only got a CardBus slot). I've also read recommendations related to BIOS settings marking the slot as "external/removable", but I haven't seen anything of the sort in this machine's BIOS setup.
